Lea Michele Gets Cheeky in Revealing Bikini Pic During Mexico Getaway
There’s really no question: When it comes to pop songs about spherical implements of destruction, Miley Cyrus ‘ “Wrecking Ball” beats Lea Michele’s “Cannonball” in every way, not least in the matter of each song’s central metaphor. “I came in like a wrecking ball / I never hit so hard in love,” Cyrus sings , “All I wanted was to break your walls / All you ever did was wreck me.” That’s good writing — concise, emotional, easy to visualize. Then there’s Michele, who sings, “Now I will start living today / Today I close the door / I got this new beginning, and I will fly like a cannonball.” Um, no. INTERACTIVE: Discover songs of L.A. And yet despite the awkwardness of that image — do cannonballs even fly especially high? — Pop & Hiss will admit there’s something appealing about “Cannonball,” the lead single from the “Glee” star’s upcoming debut, due March 4. Perhaps it’s the thumping beat that recalls Leona Lewis’ ” Bleeding Love ,” of which we’re always happy to be reminded. It might be the soaring melody, which even saddled with that clunky lyric attains some lift-off. More likely, though, it’s Michele’s unyielding delivery, a seeming vestige of her Broadway-baby days that gives “Cannonball” a kind of unembarrassed intensity. Vocally, she’s going for it here in a way most pop stars don’t; think Barbra, not Britney. That go-for-broke quality carries over to the song’s video, which premiered online Thursday and finds Michele thrashing around what appears to be somebody’s attic as she belts out those words about closed doors and new beginnings. It’s a bit much, which seems to be the point.

The Glee actress hopped on Instagram Friday to share a photo of her gorgeous Mexico getaway not to mention ample glimpses of her enviable bikini bod … and then some. In the snapshot, the 27-year-old Michele, her back to the camera, stands by a pool deck with breathtaking vistas of the sea beyond, twirling her hair as she holds on to a large potted plant. But it’s the actress’ flesh-flashing two-piece that arguably provides the most eye-catching view. “What an amazing week in Mexico… New day. New year. #Bringit2014,” she mused in the caption. It was a painful 2013 for the actress, who grieved over the death of boyfriend Cory Monteith . The Mexico jaunt was quite the switch-up from a photo she posted right before Christmas, showing her getting cozy in front of a roaring fire as she took time to “recharge, relax.” Consider it the calm before the storm: Michele is gearing up to unveil her debut album, Louder, and she’s already released its first two singles: “Cannonball” and “‘Battlefield.”

The song, released on December 10, is the first single off her debut album, Louder . Michele told MTV that the ballad helped her through the loss of her boyfriend, Corey Monteith : It certainly helps me with my loss that I’m dealing with. And whatever [listeners] need it for, I hope it gives them the strength that it’s given me. The song was written by Sia , who after a conversation with Michele, offered it up to her. During a brainstorming session, Sia asked Michele how she was feeling, and she responded: Grief is the hardest thing in the whole world. You have the opportunity at a certain point to either let it take you down or to try your best to rise. I need to get out and move forward in his memory. After hearing these moving words, Sia said, “You just said some of the lyrics just now,” referring to “Cannonball.” The prolific songwriter then asked Michele to listen and see if she wanted to include it on her album. “The minute I heard the song, I had a physical reaction to it,” Michele gushed. The minute I heard the song, I had a physical reaction to it. For me, its been my strength, Michele said in an interview with MTV . I listen to it every day. I know it was brought into my life for a reason. Its really been so helpful for me and I hope its the same for other people as its been for me. A foray into pop music seems like a pretty logical next step for the singer/actress, who became famous through Glee after starting her career on Broadway. Michele starred in Spring Awakening and anyone whos seen her rendition of the musicals song Mama Who Bore Me knows the girl can really sing, unlike many of her fellow female pop singers (Im looking at you, Miley). So if you, too, had a physical reaction after watching the video for Cannonball (if it lasts too long, go see a doctor), more Lea Michele can be seen and heard when her entire album Louder is released on March 4.
